Rider

What is a rider? It is important that you understand the impact a rider can have on your life insurance. Are you even aware of what a rider can do, or have you not heard of one yet? Do not be shy about learning more about all things, including more about a life insurance rider. Riders can really dictate your coverage, and you need to have the coverage that is right for you. That is why we want you to take your time and figure out how a rider can work best in your life.

What is a Rider?

If you need additional benefits, you can buy some and add them to your normal life insurance policy. Each individual benefit that you add is called a rider. These are mainly used to increase your coverage, but you can also limit the coverage set down by the policy. You do not just have to limit yourself to one rider; you can have as many as you like. Remember though, each rider costs money, so every time you add one you are also adding cost. In some cases, if you draw a claim on one of the riders, it will terminate the rider, but not the original policy. Check with your life insurance company if you are interested in a rider because the rates change depending on rider, company and policy.

Some Typical Riders

If you like to engage in bungee jumping, sky diving, hang gliding, or anything of that nature, there are riders that can include those activities in your life insurance policy. Check with your insurance company for specifics. A Spouse Insurance Rider offers you the chance to get your spouse term life insurance for an additional cost. An Accidental Death Rider pays out more life insurance if the insured dies by an accident. The payout can be two times the coverage. A Child Term Rider provides coverage for a child if they die before a certain age. This rider can usually be converted to permanent life insurance down the road. A Long Term Care Rider helps out the insured if they require long term care by living in a nursing home or if they need home care. There are more options for riders, so check with your life insurance company!

Custom Fit Your Needs

Riders can be a positive in your life insurance because they allow you to modify your policy to really fit your needs. This is a great way to control those situations in your life that seem like they are always changing. Do not get every single rider possible. You will not need them all, and it can get quite expensive. Understand every single rider, what is being offered, and how much it costs. Consult your family, and together you can all pick out the riders that will help the overall life insurance policy. The more effort you put into this, the better the result will be.
